Malcolm Foy Trophy Final

The last of this season’s Braintree & North Essex Sunday League Cup finals took place at Halstead Town with The Malcolm Foy Trophy Memorial Trophy taking centre stage as Division Three Witham Galacticos took on Division Two Tolleshunt Knights Eagles.

Witham Galacticos started well and a created two good chances in the first five minutes, first a free-kick from Mitchell Yeo was just missed at the far post by Clark and then another ball in from Yeo found Orr but Eagles keeper Morley was out quickly to clear, Eagles first real attack saw a run by Ian Kidd down the left he then crossed for Curtis Bonnick who should of made the keeper work with his free header but nodded wide. Galacticos began to get on top stringing some nice passing moves together and they nearly took the lead on 18 minutes when a long ball over the top sent Kane Orr away, he muscled his way past a defender and got a left foot shot away which was heading for the top corner only for Morley in the Eagles goal to tip over for a corner. Eagles first real chance came on 25 minutes a bad defensive clearance by Galacticos Adam Clark fell nicely for Scott Simmons and with the goal at his mercy tried to curl the ball in but it went wide of the upright, Eagles had another opportunity three minutes later when Bonnick worked his way down the left and crossed for the unmarked Simmons who headed straight in to the arms of Galacticos keeper Cannock. Galacticos pushed again and some great work by Adam Ratcliffe on the right weaving his way into the penalty area he crossed to the far post but somehow Aaron Williams put the ball wide. The deadlock was broken with 7 minutes of the first half remaining, Sam Berriman worked his way in to the penalty area and was about to shoot when Murphy dived in to challenge bringing him down and the referee pointed to the spot, SAM BERRIMAN picked himself up and slotted the ball past Cannock to send Eagles in leading at half-time.

Half-time: Witham Galacticos 0 Tolleshunt Knights Eagles 1

Eagles started the second half well putting the Galacticos goal under early pressure without really testing the keeper, but at the other end Galacticos first corner of the second half after 51 minutes bought the equaliser, Jamie Lawes whipped the ball in and it was diverted in to his own net by Eagles defender IAN KIDD to level the scores. Eagles nearly went back in front 3 minutes later when great play by Kidd saw him weave his way in to the area, keeper Cannock came rushing out to clear Kidd lobbed the ball towards goal and it looked to be dropping in but Ballard cleared the ball off the line, at the other end Galacticos started to apply so pressure again, Jamie Lawes crossed for Orr and his neat flick was saved well by Morley and then the lively Adam Ratcliffe was put through put fired wide of goal and then the same player fired over when well placed following a Yeo free-kick, in the final 10 minutes both sides pushed for the winner, Matt Eve who looked lively on the attack for Eagles fired wide from distance and then Ratcliffe was clear on goal for Galacticos he tried to lob the keeper but Morley managed to get a hand on it and the ball dropped agonisingly past the post, Galacticos had one final chance to win it in normal time but Robbie Ratcliffe’s header was saved by Morley.

Full Time: Witham Galacticos 1 Tolleshunt Knights Eagles 1

The first period of extra time saw Galacticos threaten early and they should of been in front but for some brilliance in the Eagles goal by Morley, firstly he saved shots from Adam Ratcliffe and Jamie Lawes and then managed to tip a deflected shot by Yeo round the post, Eagles then went straight down the other end and somehow Matt Eve missed a cross on the line to give his side the advantage. Galacticos took the lead for the first time on 97 minutes when Yeo who had been at the heart of their play all game played the ball through to ADAM RATCLIFFE who drove into the area and slotted the ball home from an acute angle, they couldn’t hold it for long though and the scores were level again just three minutes later when a corner from Eagles MITCHELL WRIGHT flew straight in to the net.

Half-time – Extra time: Witham Galacticos 2 Tolleshunt Knight Eagles 2

The second period saw both sides struggling with their fitness with several players cramping up and neither side wanting to make a mistake, Eagles Matt Eve did fire a fierce shot at goal but Cannock Saved, Galacticos when some trickery from Lawes saw him well placed but he fired over and the last chance fell to Eagles when Scott Simmons shot was saved in the dying seconds to send the game to penalties.

Final Score: Witham Galacticos 2 Tolleshunt Knight Eagles 2

The shoot-out saw both sides score their first kicks but it was Paul Makepeace of Eagles who had his and Eagles second spot kick saved by Cannock and with all the other penalties scored it was left to man of the match Adam Ratcliffe to step up and fire past the keeper to give Witham Galacticos their first piece of silverware.

SC Crittall are the champions of the Premier Division for the fifth time in a row, completing the treble in the process, they won this season’s title on goal difference by one goal needing a 91st minute winner from Bradley Hickman to give them a 1-0 win at home against Rayne, the hosts had dominated but the woodwork on numerous occasions and excellent goalkeeping kept nerves on edge but Hickman’s late winner ensured the title.

Super Shooters need one win from their final four games to be crowned champions of Division One following a 10-0 win at home against bottom of the table Beckers Green, Jordan Hutchings and Josh Preston both scored twice and one apiece for Jamie Stalley, Jordan Palmer, Lewis Cunliffe, James Murray, Danny Monty and Shayne Vince. Shooters in their first season in the Braintree & North Essex Sunday league will look to complete the double next weekend.

Beaumont Wanderers moved in to second place following a 6-2 win at Zizou. the hosts opened the scoring after 20 minutes but two goals from Rowen Drann sent the visitors in leading 2-1 at the break, they then went on to dominate the second half with further goals coming from Drann completing his hat-trick, Billy Skinner, Dave Smith and James Claydon. Dan Watson and Craig Copas scored the goals for Zizou who end the season in 9th place.

The Division Two title race continues to go the wire as the top two Sporting 77 and Titan United both level on 40 points fought out a 1-1 draw, Sporting top on goal difference took the lead when Jack McIntyre converted a penalty in the first half and they looked to be heading for all three points until a Paul Webster goal in the dying minutes rescued a point for the home side.

Valley Green took another step towards the Division Three title with a 3-1 win at Notley Reserves. Harry Ellis, Brad Hughes and Charlie Bell scored the goals for Valley as they look to complete the double in their first season in the Braintree Sunday League, they are second in the table and need five points from their final three games if the other teams around them win their games. Lewis Hoy scored the only goal for Notley Reserves who finish their season in fourth place.

Division Three Cup Final

The Division Three Cup final took place at Halstead Town FC between current league leaders Terling Villa and third placed Valley Green in their first season in the Braintree & North Essex Sunday League.

Valley started the game brightly creating a couple of half chances in the first 5 minutes, first a long free-kick in by McCormack was totally missed by Terling keeper Woolfenden as he came to punch, Valley’s O’Dowd headed towards goal but the ball was cleared away, a minute later, Ryan McCormack played a lovely ball out wide to the right to Harry Ellis who played in Robbie Bennett he crossed from inside the penalty area with the ball being cleared for a corner and from McCormack’s kick O’Dowd headed just over. Terling were taking time to get in to the game trying hard but lacking the final pass to open the Valley defence up their first opportunity came on 22 minutes when Alliston played the ball over the top for Tristan Woolfenden the league’s leading scoring but he fired wide, then the same player tried to lob the keeper after another ball over the top but could only lob the ball in to the goalkeepers arms. At the other end a great quick move from Valley saw Hughes play a ball through to Bennett who controlled and hit a long diagonal cross to Ellis who unfortunately got his volley all wrong and then minutes later good control from Hughes bringing the ball down well but his fierce strike went just wide of the target. O’Dowd had another chance to give Valley the lead on 33 minutes but his unchallenged header from another McCormack corner went straight to the keeper.

Half-time: Terling Villa 0 Valley Green 0

Terling made a change at half-time and did start the second half on the front foot putting the Valley defence under some pressure on 56 minutes substitute David Cornwell headed wide when well placed following a great cross from Webb. Valley’s first effort in the half nearly brought them a goal, good work by Jamie Taylor on the left who crossed for Brad Hughes whose first time shot was well saved with his legs by Woolfenden. Both sides made changes in an effort to get that opening goal but as the half wore on they were both lacking that final ball to create a goal scoring opportunity, Valley then began to up the tempo again with Hughes firing wide on 67 minutes after he was forced wide of goal by Douglas for Terling, the pressure told 5 minutes later when a free-kick taken by Hughes was headed in by CHARLIE DYER who had made a great run in to the box to give Valley the lead, Valley were now on top Hughes tried his luck from distance after turning well but the ball ended up in the keeper’s arms, then O’Dowd got on the end of another corner only to hit the post, the Greens went further ahead on 79 minutes when Jack Lawton made his way in to the penalty area and squared the ball nicely for HARRY ELLIS to slot past the keeper. Terling didn’t give up and created a couple of late chances to pull a goal back when Tristan Woolfenden fired wide and then the same player crossed for Scott Collins who fired over the bar, but it was Valley’s day as they lifted their first piece of silverware in front of their jubilant supporters and mascots.

Western Arms are the new leaders of the Premier Division following  3-1 win in their last game of the season at home against Rayne. Ryan Henshaw, an own goal and Connor Holland scored the goals in a game they dominated throughout, Rayne pulled one back from Tom Lee.

SC Crittall are third three points behind Western with a game to play, they also levelled the goal difference after hitting double figures in a 12-2 win away at Essex Police. The visitors who lead 8-1 at half-time with Matt Staines scoring four, Bradley Hickman three and one apiece for Jon Botting, Matt Ogan, Danny Shipton, Jon Farrow and Bart Pater. Crittall just need to win their final game to take the title for the fifth time in a row. In what can only be described as a disastrous last game of the season for the Police, the only bright spots for the Police were a sensational lobbed first half goal from Dave Pomphrett and a second half strike from Adam Dowsett.

Super Shooters went top of Division One leapfrogging opponents Beacon Hill Social on goal difference following a 4-1 win, Marcus Warren, Josh Preston, Danny Monty and Jordan Hutchings scored for Shooters who with games in hand look set to secure the title in the coming weeks.

Beaumont Wanderers remain third but closed the gap on Beacon Hill to four points after they won 3-0 at Notley. Wanderers stormed in to a 3-0 lead in the first 20 minutes, Ezra Drann opened the scoring then two goals from Rowen Drann put the visitors in command but they failed to add anymore goals to the tally as they took maximum points.

Sporting 77 maintained their three point lead at the top of the Division Two table with a 6-1 win at home to New Angel Bradford Street. Jack McIntyre scored a hat-trick with the other goals coming from Martin Brighton, Chris Cook and James Lyon and they now look forward to next week’s clash against Titan United.

Second placed Titan United with a game in hand kept up the pressure on Sporting with a 4-0 win away against Braintree Town Supporters, Craig Tomlinson scored twice with Lee Cuddeford and Dan Clark also on target.

fifth placed Tolleshunt Knight Eagles entertained third place Frontline, The Eagles had looked in control for most of the match leading 2-0 at half-time scoring a further two in the second half with the goals coming from Chris Houghton, Matt Eve, Tim Eve and Scott Simmons, Houghton’s accurately headed goal was the result of a Mitchell Wright long throw. Matt Eve finished well from a well weighted cross from brother Tim, whose goal was a left foot blaster while Simmons headed into the Frontline goal from an excellent Ian Kidd free kick. Frontline pulled two goals back late in the game scoring from two set pieces with Dean Cater scoring both.

Witham Galacticos moved in to second place in Division Three after a 3-0 win away at SC Kelvedon, goals from Steve Vicarage, Adam Ratcliffe and Jamie Lawes moves them above Notley Reserves on goal difference.

Charlie Turnbull Memorial Trophy Final

Halstead Town played host to the Charlie Turnbull Memorial Trophy between holders SC Crittall and recent Division One Cup winners Super Shooters with a tight game expected.

Super Shooters made the early running with a free-kick from Cunliffe being punched away under pressure by Crittall keeper Graham Smith then a long shot from James Murray was cleared away to safety. Crittall’s first attack saw Matt Staines good jinking run took him in to the box he crossed for Botting who tried an overhead kick which he missed which surprised Hickman who was waiting behind and the chance went begging, two minutes later a fine driven in free-kick from Staines just evaded Read who was attacking at the far post, at the other end Murray sent Coote clear and as he was about the shot two Crittall defenders challenged and the ball bounced away, the same two players combined again on 20 minutes with Coote firing wide of the target, the game was even with both teams defences pretty much on top, with 15 minutes of the half left Shooters nearly went in front, a long free-kick in to the box by Cunliffe saw Smith charge out to punch, Palmer got there first and flicked to wards goal but the ball dropped agonisingly wide. The deadlock was broken three minutes later when Crittall were awarded a penalty after Shooters keeper Vince and Hickman challenged for the ball as the ball broke Hickman tried to get to his feet a tangle of legs between two saw the referee point to the spot from which DANNY SHIPTON converted to send Crittall in leading at the break.

Half-time: SC Crittall 1 Super Shooters 0

Super Shooters made a substitution at half-time as they looked to get back in to the game, four minutes after the re-start they went close to levelling the scores, Coote played the ball wide to Murray he entered the box and fired a shot across goal which bounced awkwardly for Smith as the ball looked to be going in he managed to palm the ball away before eventually gathering in. Two minutes later Crittall extended the lead when Shooters failed to clear their lines as the ball bobbled around the penalty area, the ball came out to Shipton who fired back in where MATT STAINES was on hand to put the ball in to the roof of the net to make it 2-0. Shooters made another substitution as they tried hard to find a way back, a long free-kick by Partridge was headed wide by Murray and then Partridge himself tried from distance but wide and with the Crittall defence marshalled well again by captain Jon Read dealing with everything comfortably there was no way back and frustrations began to tell with a number of silly bookings. With fifteen minutes to go Crittall nearly made it three when a great run down the left by Dean Gilder his cross found Jake Gilder and his fierce goal bound shot was deflected wide for a corner, Shooters hit the bar with six minutes left after good work in midfield Michael Huwes was sent clear down the left and his dipping cross came back of the bar with Smith beaten, they did finally pull a goal back in the dying minutes when a corner went it on off a Crittall player for a OWN GOAL. The final whistle went seconds after the re-start with Referee Cook still having some work to do sending of Shooters Huwes off for dissent as the players left the field. SC Crittall deservedly retain the trophy their second piece of silverware this season and have the treble still to play for in the coming weeks.

Braintree & North Essex Sunday League action this week saw Tolleshunt Knight Eagles reach the final of the Malcolm Foy Trophy following a 2-0 win away against Braintree Town Supporters. The game started evenly with both teams having chances on goal, but a scramble in the Braintree goalmouth led to Mitchell Wright forcing the ball over the line to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead then a run on goal by Scott Simmons was pushed wide by the Braintree defence but Simmons took advantage of the keeper being off his line to finish with an inch perfect chip from an acute angle to make it 2-0 to the visitors at half-time. In the second half, the Eagles piled on the pressure but could not finish their chances. Eventually Matt Eve’s attacking run looked like a certain goal when one on one with keeper. The keeper came out of his area and handled the ball to stop the shot. A red card ensued, leaving Braintree with ten men. Even with ten men, and numerous Eagles attacks on their goal, Braintree held out and even threatened a goal but Eagles progressed to the final to face Witham Galacticos at Halstead Town on 19th May.

Beaumont Wanderers move back in to third place in Division One following a 3-0 win at Old Bramstonians, the visitors took the lead in the first minute when Rowen Drann headed home from a cross, it stayed that way until half-time, in the second half Beaumont made substitutions which had an effect as James Claydon and Josh Freedman both scored fine goals to give the visitors maximum points.

Halstead Town FC was the venue for this afternoon’s Neil Horrocks Memorial Invitation Plate Final between Division One Beaumont Wanderers and Division Three Sporting 77 Reserves. Sporting having previously beaten and drawn with other teams from Division One in the group stages were looking for another upset.

Beaumont attacking up the slope in the first half had the first chance on 5 minutes when a corner from Ben Johnston was headed straight at  Sporting goalkeeper Williamson by Graham Haslam, a minute later a miskicked free-kick from a Sporting defender fell to Billy Skinner on the right for Beaumont he made a great run in to the penalty area crossing across goal to nobody when well placed to shot himself. Sporting’s first attack came in the 12th minute a throw in by Wayne Kirby went to Dishan Popat who hooked the ball over his head it caused confusion in the Beaumont defence with the ball being eventually cleared away, at the other end Beaumont wasted another chance when Skinner was put through on goal he rounded the keeper and with the goal open he blazed wide. Sporting then had a shout for a penalty in the 15th minute when Dave Smith was bundled over in the box but all appeals were waved away by referee Wood. Beaumont pressed again and Ezra Drann flicked the ball through for himself to get on to but Williamson was on hand to push the ball over, on 20 minutes Dishan Popat weaved his way in to the penalty area crossing excellently before the ball was cleared for a corner from the resulting kick Beaumont’s defence failed to clear the ball as as it bobbled around the area no one from Sporting could divert the bsall in to the net and it was scrambled clear. Sporting took the lead on 28 minutes when a corner from DISHAN POPAT went straight in at the near post. three minutes later Beaumont nearly equalised when Smith played a ball through to Rowen Drann who flicked the ball past the onrushing keeper but the ball drifted past the post a minute later another wasted chance for Beaumont, Skinner’s long shot was pushed away by Williamson a free-kick was given and from that Ezra Drann headed staright in to the keeper arms. Beaumont finally got the goal they had been threatening on 43 minutes, Haslam won the ball in midfield he played it wide to Skinner who crossed for ROWEN DRANN to tap in to an empty net, it could of been two a minute later a great piece of skill from Haslam who flicked the ball through to Drann who fired wide of the target.

Half-time: Beaumont Wanderers 1 Sporting 77 Reserves 1

Beaumont changed their keeper at the beginning of the half with Will Green replacing Lewis Apps and they started the half well putting pressure on the Sporting defence on 54 minutes Ezra Drann played the ball through to Ben Johnston but Williamson was out quickly to clear the danger then Skinner’s cross was somehow headed away from goal by R.Drann when he should of hit the target, two minutes later a clearance from sporting cannoned of another defender and in to the path of Drann one on one with williamson but the latter again cleared away for a corner, sporting’s first chance of the half nearly put them back in front a long free-kick from Kirby found its way to Popat but his shot across goal went inches wide. Beaumont immediately attacked down the other end with Johnston firing the ball high and wide when well placed, the second goal eventually came in the 62nd minute Ezra Drann played a defence splitting pass through to brother ROWEN DRANN he looked to be going away from goal but struck a fierce shot into the roof of the net. Sporting kept battling and attacked again, Luke Frisby got clear of the defence keeper Green rushed out of his goal missed the ball but Frisby could only push the ball wide of the post, then a great run and cross by sub Kieron Dodge down the right was cleared to safety, both teams created more half chances as the half went on with the best chance falling to Sporting’s Dodge whose first time diping effort with four minutes left was saved by Green leaving Beaumont to hold on for the last few minutes to take the trophy for the second time in three seasons having made hard work of this game.
