Barnston win John Horrocks Trophy
League champions of Division One Barnston AFC pulled of a brilliant result against Premier Division side Braintree Iron winning 3-0.
The early stages of the first half saw chances coming at both ends with Iron`s Simon Curry sending an over head kick going just wide, at the other end a good shot from Barnston’s Connor Fincham saw the ball fly over the bar. The first twenty minutes, both teams were playing well and a good even contest. Another chance came for Braintree Iron when Jamie Gray sent a header over the cross bar. Barnston were always causing trouble in the Iron defence from the pace of Matt Simpson and the 6 foot 7 Isaac Falk, but in the closing minutes of the first half it was the Iron in full flight putting pressure on the Barnston defence but they stood firm and the score stayed 0-0 at Half Time.
Barnston came out strong in the second half with Connor Fincham going close. The first goal came when excellent football by Matt Simpson saw his pin point cross find the head of Isaac Falk who made no mistake flashing the ball past Iron keeper Ben Warren. Braintree Iron were still pushing forward but finding the Barnston defence very stubborn and not giving anything away. Another goal came for Barnston when Connor Fincham fired home from distance giving Ben Warren no chance to save 2-0. The Barnston defence started giving silly free kicks away just outside the box but the Iron could not put any shots on target. Barnston made sure of the win when clever play by the busy Matt Simpson beating defenders and skipping round the keeper and firing home into an empty net to make it 3-0.Braintree Iron had one more chance to get a late goal from a corner, the cross was good but the header hit the cross bar and the Final Score was 3-0 to Barnston AFC. A well deserved Man of the Match Award went to Barnston AFC Matt Simpson.
