Broomfield win Neil Horrocks Memorial Invitation Plate
A nice sunny day for the last final of the 2014-15 season with the Neil Horrocks Memorial Invitation Plate between division one side Old Bramstonians and division three Broomfield taking place at Halstead Town FC.
Broomfield had a good chance in the first minute when Ben Hampton fluffed his shot when well placed inside the penalty area, down the other end a fine ball over the top by Matthams sent Chris Long clear of the defence but he was unable to control the bouncing ball and the defender cleared for a corner, minutes later Hampton was put through clear on goal but Everitt was out quickly to clear then a fierce strike from skipper Najeeb Ali went just over. Old Bramstonians were awarded a free-kick just outside the area and Long’s low drive caused problems for Cooper who eventually cleared and then Jameson was free in the box but he shot wide when he should of hit the target, then Long again set up Jameson whose shot was well saved by Cooper the ball was worked back to Jared Chammach who fired in to the side netting. The deadlock was broken in the 34th minute when a diagonal ball by Alfie Prior dropped nicely for Ben HAMPTON who slid the ball past the advancing keeper to give Broomfield the lead, a minute later Broomfield looked to extend their lead by Kidman’s shot from distance went wide and then substitute Ansell who had just literally walked on to the past received a ball back from a free-kick and fired in a fierce shot which skimmed the post, the final chance of the half fell to Wilkerson who was in a great position to equalise but he shot poorly wide.
Half-time – Old Bramstonians 0 Broomfield 1
Bramstonians made a change in goal for the second half with Stewart Haines going between the sticks and Mark Everitt reverting to full back, Haines was called in to action in the first minute as he easily gathered a shot from Roche, and it was Everitt who had a bigger impact when he equalised on the hour firing home an excellent free-kick from outside the penalty area to get Bramstonians back in the game and they had a great chance to go in to the lead three minutes later when Marc Jameson latched on to a ball over the top and he somehow missed the target when it was easier to score, minutes later another opportunity went begging when Wilkerson played in Stuart Barrows down left, he beat two and cut inside before blazing wide. They paid for those missed chances when Broomfield went back in front with 16 minutes left, Marcus Young was sent clear of the defence and he slid the ball past the advancing keeper, they had the chance to make it 3-1 when Mower crossed for Kidman but he stroked the ball wide, Bramstonians responded with Jameson crossing for Sam Parsons whose first time shot was very well saved by Cooper, then Broomfield had trouble getting the ball away from their area the ball found its way to Chris Long whose goal bound shot was somehow deflected away for a corner, Broomfield weathered the storm and saw out the last few minutes to lift the trophy.
