Division Two Cup Final
The first cup final of the 2018/19 season took place this afternoon with Witham Town Sunday taking on Notley Sunday Reserves for the Division Two Cup.
On a bright sunny afternoon with a decent crowd in attendance it was Witham Town who made the early running with most of the action being played in the Notley half without any real chances being created as the Notley defence coped well with the Witham attacks. As the half wore on Notley came more in to it and on 14 minutes a lovely passage of passing football ended with Scott Collins firing wide from distance then a fine cross from Matthew Weston caused problems for Porter in the Witham goal forcing him to stretch to push the ball away as Ferrell was on hand at the far post to head in, Notley did put the ball in the net minutes later but the effort was ruled out for offside, then another great cross from Weston forced Porter to palm away again with an outstretched arm for a corner.
The tie was very evenly matched with neither side creating anything of note until the 31st minute when Notley gave the ball away in midfield, it fell to Witham’s Ky Richardson who weaved his way in from the left into the penalty before striking the ball right footed through the legs of Notley keeper Harry Phillip and in to the net to make it 1-0. The half continued fairly even but with nine minutes of the half to go and fairly innocuous looking challenge by Notley’s Bradley Barnard on Thomas Hayes was adjudged to be a red card by the referee and Notley were reduced to 10 men for the rest of the contest.

Notley made two substitutions before the second half began to try and get back in to the game but it was Witham Town who had the first opportunity of the half on 49 minutes when a free-kick from Shane Lindsell was saved excellently by Phillips with the rebound being cleared away to safety, on 57 minutes a free-kick wide on the left for Notley saw Woolfenden’s ball in headed straight at the keeper by Thompson, then two minutes later Witham had a great chance to increase their lead, Jake Stewart made a fine run in to the penalty area and as Phillip came rushing out of his goal he squared the ball for an easy tap in but a defender was on hand to clear the ball away, then minutes later Witham broke away again and Jake Stewart was sent clear again but Phillip made a great save diving in bravely at his feet to take the ball away, at the other end a free-kick from Woolfenden cannoned off the bar, Notley began to get some momentum but each time they attacked players were down ending with fouls from Witham who had four bookings in quick succession as they broke up the play.
On 78 minutes Notley’s Collins sent the ball down the right, Ferrell got away from his marker and sent a cross in and as Woolfenden looked set to score Harry Stoneham made a fine goal saving challenge sliding in and then a free-kick from Collins was fired well wide by the unmarked Danny Downes. Witham then counter attacked Richardson got away down the left and crossed in for Jacob Palmer who completely missed the ball it fell nicely to Marcus Rayfield whose fierce shot was well saved by Phillip, Witham then sealed the tie with minutes remaining when from a throw in on the left the ball found its way to Jacob Palmer who struck the ball in to the net passed Phillip, Notley tried in vain to pull a goal back as the game entered 5 minutes of added on time, the final whistle sounded and wild celebrations followed as Witham Town Sunday lifted their first piece of silverware.
