Great Bradfords win Malcolm Foy Trophy
Great Bradfords FC came out victorious in the Malcolm Foy Trophy in a hard fought final winning 2-1 after extra time against Division Two winners Tiptree Jobserve First Team.
Tiptree Jobserve nudged themselves ahead early on and continued to pepper the Great Bradfords goal throughout the first half. Bradfords continued to defend resiliently with a few fine saves from the Bradfords Number 1! An early change after the water break saw JJ Hemmings introduced for his first taste of a senior final at only 16. The score remained at 1-0 until half time which was fortunate for a Bradfords side who had their backs against the wall for much of the first 45.
Bradfords came out in the second half rejuvenated and fighting attacking regularly with a superb and organised Tiptree side ready to mop up any danger. Whilst the boys attacked it looked not to be the day for the Red and Black’s until a 85th minute goal from Harry Mills saw Bradfords at 1-1 and heading to extra time.
Consistency in defence for Bradfords ended up being key and they continued this in extra time with the first 15 being very even. The sides continued in the second half until we reached the point to consider penalty kicks. Up stepped man of the match Ryan Vickery, who fired in through the keepers leg with only 2 minutes left on the clock. A dubious last minute red card for Josh Preston was the only tarnish on a great day with Bradfords the victors at 2-1 after the most unexpected run.
Bradfords had a hard run to the day playing the winners of Division Three as well as 4 sides from Division Two before reaching the Division Two Champions elect in the final. A great victory for the underdogs on the day who had to come back from a tough start.
That’s the second time in three years the Great Bradfords name sits on the trophy, the difference is last time we celebrated in style with someone incredibly important. Scott Gilhooly. Taken from us too soon in May 2020 whilst we were in lockdown. Scott’s Legacy is proudly emblazened on the backs of our shirts and as Jack Gilgrist proudly said during our celebrations this win is for one person, Scott, only you! We love you Scott, miss you dearly and hope we’ve done you proud.
