Tolleshunt Knights Eagles victorious in Neil Horrocks Memorial Final (Updated)
Congratulations to Tolleshunt Knights Eagles who won today’s Neil Horrocks Memorial Invitation Plate Final following a 3-2 win after extra time against Great Bradfords Reserves.
The match got off to a fast start with both sides showing attacking intent and after 7 minutes we had the first goal when Great Bradfords went in front, a free-kick was awarded for handball ball just outside the Eagles penalty area, Stephen CAIN stepped up and curled the ball left footed past the outside stretched hand of Aidan Poole in the Eagles goal. Three minutes later it was 1-1, a fine long throw in by Ashley Turner to the edge of the six yard box was only flicked on by a Bradfords defender and Andy CHEEK was on hand to fire the ball home from close range. Eagles nearly doubled the lead a minute later when a free-kick from Melia drifted to the far post towards the unmarked Jordon Hoy and with the keeper out of position Hoy just couldn’t get a toe on the ball to divert it in as Eagles began to more pressure on Bradfords defence with the lively Melia seeing plenty of the ball down the left and one jinking run which included beating two players while running along the bye line and a back heel for a chance which just came to nothing. Bradfords did have a good chance mid-way through the half when Eagles failed to clear a cross properly the ball feel perfectly for Michael Kayley to finish but he missed the target. Eagles were thwarted twice in a minute with fifteen minutes of the half remaining a fine cross by Melia was met well by Cheek forcing Fisher in the Bradfords goal to tip the ball acrobatically over the bar and from the resultant corner Fisher again did well to tip Corcoran’s goal bound header over but the pressure told and in the 34th minute they went in front for the first time, Andy Cheek was sent clear he was unable to find an opening and played the ball back for Jordan HOY who hit a great shot from 25 yards out which flew into the top corner.
Great Bradfords made a substitution at half-time and then two more early in the second half as they attempted to get back in the game and they had the best two chances in the opening 20 minutes, firstly a free-kick from Kayley fell to Shaun Clifford who was unmarked between two defenders eight yards out but his tame header fell straight into the arms of Poole when he should of scored and then roles reversed as Clifford crossed for Kayley whose header was well saved low down by Poole the ball bounced away to Ellis Mayne who fired in to the side netting from a tight angle. The game took another twist in the 71st minute when Eagles Ashley Turner stupidly got himself sent-off when he raised his hands and pushed an opponent in the chest twice during a silly few seconds, this gave Bradfords a boost and sent Eagles on the back foot to defend the lead, Bradfords did exert some pressure in the Eagles half but failed to create anything of note as Eagles seemed to be seeing the game out until the 3rd minute of injury when a clearance fell to Michael KAYLEY who hit a superb strike from 25 yards past Poole for a dramatic equaliser to send the game in to extra time.
It was Bradfords who showed first in the opening minutes of extra time, Kayley’s free-kick forcing a good save by Poole but it was Eagles who were defending well, went down the other end and took the lead again with four minutes of the first period remaining, Tom Dickinson crossing for Greg CORCORAN to rise unmarked to head past Fisher, the second period saw both sides on their knees, trying to sum up some energy for any attacks, Bradfords kept trying and only a fine last ditch tackle from Nathan Brine prevented Shaun Clifford with a shot on goal and with the minutes ticking by they continued to try and put balls in to the Eagles box but the 10 men held on well to take the trophy.
