Western beat Critalls in Premier Cup Final
The Premier Division Cup final took place this morning with holders SC Crittall taking on Western Arms at Braintree Town’s Miles Smith Stadium.
Crittall’s had the first opportunity on goal after 2 minutes when a free-kick from the left by Staines forced Jones in the Western goal to punch clear, Kean Riseborough then had Westerns first shot on goal but his rising effort went over the bar, at the other end Staines burst down the right and pulled the ball back for Lodge who shot tamely at the keeper. Western took the lead on 14 minutes when a through ball from Hollocks found DAN GAGE and he brilliantly lifted the ball over Smith in the Crittall goal and in to the net, minutes later Sam Clyde failed to connect properly to a Riseborough free-kick with his header going wide, Western maintained the pressure and doubled the lead on 23 minutes when Sam Hollocks shot from the edge of the six yard area, Smith saved with his legs, the ball fell nicely to GAGE who fired in off the bar and the back of Smith and in to the net for his second of the morning to make it 2-0. Crittalls had a quick spell of pressure following the goal, they forced two corners form deflected shots with Hickman heading the last over the bar when well placed, then a great ball from Pater sent Staines away down the right he crossed in for Hickman who went down after which looked like a shove from the defender the ball fell to Gilder who fired wide. The game then settled down with neither side creating much until the final action of the half saw Gilder slide a ball through the defence for Hickman who shot but Jones pulled off a fine save to preserve his sides two goal lead.
Half-time: SC Crittall 0 Western Arms 2
Crittall started the liveliest of the two teams in the opening few minutes of the second half with most of the play in the Western half but they failed to create any real chances with Paul Ansell and the rest of the Western defence looking dominant. Crittall did pull a goal back after 65 minutes when the Western defence failed to clear their lines after a corner from Shipton, the ball fell to JAKE GILDER who hit a brilliant strike past Jones from outside of the area to give Crittall some hope, but 5 minutes later Western made it 3-1 when a free-kick was headed home powerfully by DAVID HAWES. Crittall’s had a great chance to reduce to arrears with 8 minutes left when a diagonal ball fell nicely in to the path of James Cordery who had only been on the field a few minutes but he failed to find the net, at the other end substitutes Hewitt and Holland combined well for Western exchanging passes before Holland forced a fine save from Smith and then Gage on the follow up forced another good save from Smith, Western made a few late changes before the final whistle sounded to give them a fully deserved victory.
